Exercise 11 instructions: Lip trills

- Certainly, my saying get rid of the tension is all well and good, but how to do it is the important aspect of the process. The first way we're going to do it is by actually limbering these muscles, and we're going to do that by using what I call lip trills. So this is kind of a motorboat flapping of your lips. Some find it easier to do, you may find it more difficult. Maybe not, I hope not. But I'm gonna lead you through a few steps that you can take to discover how to do it. Done the easiest way, which you may need to build up to, is simply this. (trilling lips ) It has to do with not shoving air so hard, 'cause if you do, it just blows them out. If you've ever tried to make sound with a blade of grass, you put it between your thumbs, I was never that good at it, and you sort of blow in and if you blow too hard, it won't vibrate and you won't get any sound. So you have to find that balance of just how much air, or like if you're playing a flute, or blowing into a bottle…
