Moderated vs. unmoderated research

- When you think of conducting research, you might assume you're directly interacting with a participant during a session. That's called moderated research. This is ideal, because you're present to ask unscripted questions and dig deeper into interesting topics, though can be time consuming and it's not always possible. The most common moderated methods are usability tests and interviews. Unmoderated research is completed by a participant with no researcher present. These sessions can usually be completed faster than moderated sessions. You can collect more information in a shorter amount of time, but you still need plenty of time to review the data. Examples include filling out a survey or performing usability tasks and answering predetermined questions.
