Determining project or product stage
- Regardless of the development environment, one of the most important steps to determining research methodology is to examine what stage in the product development cycle you're in. At a very high level, you're typically in one of three product stages. Strategizing something brand new, actively designing and building, or assessing the performance of something live. Whether it's a completely new service or a new feature of a legacy software, when you're strategizing about something new, you should focus your research on uncovering users' needs and goals, finding any areas for improvement from existing solutions, and validating that your ideas serve the users in some unique and meaningful way. We generally say that this kind of research is about understanding if you're building the right thing. To determine users' goals and motivations, you'll want to focus on utilizing qualitative attitudinal methods, such as interviews.…
