Perception

- Let's pause for a moment and make a quick though slightly arbitrary distinction between sensation and perception. We often use the term sensation to refer to the detection of sensory information. Sensation is what happens in the eye, in the skin, or in the ear. We use the term perception to mean processing of sensory information, how we come to understand and make meaning of it. Perception is what happens in the brain. The actual boundaries between sensation and perception are not this clear and distinct because these are both complex physiological and neurological processes. We make this distinction because it helps us better understand these topics as we start to discuss how we recognize and understand the information coming from the world around us.
