Microinteractions: Haptics
- [Instructor] Haptics refers to how people perceive and manipulate objects using their senses of touch and proprioception. Touch includes a range of sensations, temperature, texture, pressure, vibration, and more. Proprioception comes from sensors inside our bodies that tell us about movement, spatial location and arrangement, rotation, and force, such as the weight of an object or if something is pushing back against us. Most of our digital products are not able to manipulate their weight, temperature or size, so there are currently a limited number of forms of haptic information we can provide. Vibrations are created by small motors inside the device that spin an off-center weight. The mass of the weight and the rate of rotation determine the strength of the vibration.
