Classical conditioning

- [Instructor] You may have heard about Ivan Pavlov, and his experiments with dogs, in which they learn to salivate in response to the ringing of a bell. His research led to the theory of classical conditioning. First, we start with signals that already produce a behavior, such as the taste of good food causing us to salivate. Then we pair a neutral signal, that produces no response, with the existing signal and response. Pavlov paired a bell with the presentation of food. If we pair these two signals often enough, the neutral signal becomes associated with the original signal, and the neutral signal will begin to elicit the behavior. The dog associates the bell with food, so the bell starts to elicit salivation. Classical conditioning can also be used to explain how we learn emotional responses to otherwise neutral signals, or triggers, in our environment. These are called conditioned emotional responses.
