Measures
- Measures divide music into groups of beats. A beat is a division of time. Beats are the basic pulse behind music upon which we build rhythms. Rhythm is a pattern of long and short sounds and silences. The vertical lines that cross through the staff are called bar lines. They show where one measure begins and another ends. Double bar lines mark the end of a section or short example. We know that the location of a note on the staff determines its pitch.
