Dots

Dots

- Another way to increase the length of a note is by adding a dot. A dot placed after any note increases the value of the note by 1/2. For instance, placing a dot after a half note, which is held for two beats, increases its value by half. So its new duration is three beats. Two plus one equals three. A dotted half note is equal to a half note tied to a quarter note. A dotted whole note would last for six beats because a whole note lasts for four beats, and half of four is two. Four plus two equals six. A dotted quarter note lasts for one and a half beats.
