- Mean, median, mode, and range are just ways to talk about data. So let's go through these one by one. The mean of a set of data is the same thing as its average. We sometimes also call it the arithmetic mean. So let's say I have a set of data. I'll just make up some numbers here. 1, 5, 8, 9, and 12. If I wanted to get the mean, or the average of that data, I have to add them up. So 1+5=6+8=14, 23+12=35. So I would have 35 total divided by how many values there are and I would see that the mean is 7. Okay, so what about the median? The median is the middle number in a data set. Here it's really easy because we see the middle number is 8. There's five numbers and 8 is in the middle. It's two from the left-most number and two from the right-most number. So our median would be 8. There's a different circumstance though you have to think about for median. What if there is no middle number? So what if I had the data set 1, 2, 3, and 4?
