- [Voiceover] Possibly the most important overall skill for success in the GRE is the ability to understand what you read. For that reason, it's helpful for many of my students to deliberately try to improve their reading comprehension before they take the test. So in this video I'll go over a few ways to build your reading skill. So simply reading is a good idea but it's not really enough. It does matter what you read; 'cause the GRE writes or chooses passages taken from a variety of academic areas: science, history, art, literary criticism and so on; so having some background knowledge in the area of reading passages from will improve your comprehension of that passage since you'll have a frame of reference for some of what the passage is talking about. Now, the passage style on the GRE is most closely a match of the style of academic journals; so try reading a variety of online journals. There are several sources of free academic journals online.
