- Another common path into the role of DevOps engineer is growing from a traditional operations engineer or system administrator role. People transitioning from these roles usually have already cultivated a deep understanding of operating system internals in addition to good troubleshooting skills. Learn from hands on experience, firefighting production issues during on call rotations. Additionally, they usually understand how to measure and monitor system performance including the ability to narrow into system bottlenecks, forecast load and capacity plan. Lastly, folks coming from these roles potentially already have a home lab set up with an understanding of computer virtualization.
