The rulebook for breaking the rules

(music playing) - People talk to me about intelligent disobedience and they say, "Bob, you're implying breaking the rules." That's not correct. I'm directly recommending you break the rules. But, there are rules for breaking the rules. Our businesses typically have rules. Corporate processes, guidelines, and a good set of guidelines, 95 percent of the time, are going to work just fine. But what about the other five, when it just doesn't fit. (thud, glass breaking) That's when it's time for intelligent disobedience. Intelligent disobedience comes with rules, however. Rules for breaking the rules. First, you only do this in that small percentage of time when the standard rules aren't going to work. You don't do this in stealth. You communicate your intent, what you're trying to achieve, and how you're seeking to achieve it with intelligent disobedience. Next, it is absolutely not passive aggressive behavior.
