Responding with empathy

I think in terms of social interactions, empathy plays a really, really important role. I think that it really helps people truly understand each other in the way that they want to be understood. When you display empathy towards a person, you're signaling that you care about what they're going through. And while you might not be able to fully put yourself in their shoes, you can certainly understand or identify in some way. And I think that already makes them feel heard and makes them feel like, you care about what they're going through and what they have to say. A couple strategies to make sure that you're responding empathetically, are one: acknowledging the person's feelings. For example, you can say, That must have been really frustrating. Or, I could see how that would be difficult, or something along those lines to first ensure that you're showing that you acknowledge their feelings.
