Workflows: The basics

A workflow is a multi-step process that proceeds through each of those steps until it reaches its completion. Here's a simple example. I'm requesting time off for a vacation, so I begin by filling out a vacation request form, which I hand if it's on paper or email, perhaps to my supervisor, who then has the ability to either approve or reject my vacation request. But assuming they approve it, they then send it to the Human Resources Department, and the folks in Human Resources validate the request by making sure that I have enough days to cover the length of vacation that I've requested, and assuming if I do, I would ultimately like to get news back in some way that says, hey, you can go on that vacation, and then I go on vacation. Workflows like these, or workflows that are simpler or more complex are common as mud in business organizations. Even small organizations have workflows. Time off and vacation requests, reimbursement request, employee onboarding, travel requests, requests…
