- Once you've reviewed your resume to make sure that it's clear and concise, take another close look; this time at your spelling, grammar, and formatting. Even if you're not applying for a job that calls for strong writing skills, mistakes and inconsistencies might signal sloppiness or a lack of genuine interest, and that is not at all what you're going for here. For spelling, obviously you can use spell check and you should, but don't stop there. Spell check won't catch incorrect words that happen to be spelled correctly, so go through your document line by line, paying particular attention to homophones or words that sound alike, but have different spelling and different meaning, like which and witch or advise and advice. The app Grammarly is great for checking your spelling as well, and there's a free version, so no need to break your bank.
