- Let me tell you a story. Those six words, let me tell you a story, they grab attention. Even the mere promise of a story makes an audience perk up to hear what you're going to say next. But what exactly is a story? And how do you find a story buried in a pile of facts, data, or statistics? The most basic story format is this. Something happens to someone. When you are reviewing facts to put into your presentation, look for that format. Something happens to someone. For example, at a quarterly update, you might be tempted to state the fact that sales increased by 19% over plan. And that's a terrific fact to share, but you can dig a little deeper because that fact contains our basic story format. Something happened to someone.
