Which leads me to my first tip for you, improving your design skills requires a community, and if you are a presentation designer, there is one community where we all congregate, and that is the Presentation Guild, a non-profit organization founded by several PowerPoint MVPs and presentation designers. If the Guild isn't your thing and you want less of a commitment, there is an annual conference for presentations and presentation designers, the Presentation Summit.
