When and how to find a mentor
- Everyone would like a mentor. Who wouldn't? After all, the picture of a mentor in our culture, is someone who's older, wiser, and exactly where you want to be in 10 or 15 years. And they reach down to help you avoid all the mistakes they made. Fantastic. Except, by and large, those people don't really exist. Of course, some folks get lucky and find that. But the vast majority don't. In fact, the people most of us would love to have as mentors are the ones who are the most successful. Which means, they're usually the busiest, and have the most people petitioning them for their time and energy. So what can you do? The answer isn't just to throw up your hands in defeat, and assume you have to figure everything out on your own. Instead, it's to form, what I call, "a mentor board of directors". Which is a concept I discuss in my book "Reinventing You". Instead of pinning your hopes on one perfect person, think more broadly about you want to learn, and who you can learn it from. First…
