- We often think networking is only important inside our company or inside our industry. After all, those are the connections that seem to have more immediate ROI, the people who can help you get a promotion or access to a new opportunity. But outside connections are critical too. You don't want your entire network to be people inside your company, because that limits your perspective. You won't be exposed to nearly as many new ideas. And hopefully this won't happen to you, but think about Circuit City, Blockbuster, Borders. If you worked there, it would have been nice to know people in other companies or industries that you could call.
