- Hopefully, you love everyone you work with, but occasionally, let's face it, you might have a rival. We all know obsessing about a rival at work isn't healthy. But thinking about your rivals in the right way can actually be a spur to growth. Here's how. First, one of reasons we often develop rivals is they're similar enough to us in some ways that we compare ourselves. You don't often see 23-year old assistants having a 63-year old rival at the office. It's just not a relevant comparison. But if someone is like you in many ways, you notice and are sometimes bothered by the differences. That insight can be a useful clue for you, because it can point to areas where you're weak and they have a skill that you grudgingly admire. If they keep getting lauded for their public speaking and you resent it, maybe that's actually a sign that you should double down on your own presentation skills and should take a class or join Toastmasters.
