- We'd all like to be respected by our colleagues. Often, that happens over time as people get to know you and see you in action. But you can also accelerate that process so it doesn't have to take a decade. Here's what to do. First, there's one incredibly easy way to build a positive relationship with your colleagues and gain their respect: always keep your word. This is the most important aspect of trust building. People need to view you as being good to your word. Now, the tricky part is that in order to be able to do this, you have to be very deliberate about what you commit to doing. You can't people-please. It might feel good in the moment to say, "The report will be ready tomorrow," but if you know it's simply not going to happen, you have to say that upfront and explain why.
