Getting people to listen to you when you’re not seen as an expert
- If you have a lot of experience or credentials, it's usually not that hard to get people to listen to your point of view. But what if you're relatively new in your company or your field and you're not seen as an expert? How do you get people to listen to you and take you seriously? Here are three strategies you can apply to make sure your ideas get heard. First, you can always borrow other people's expertise. You might not be an expert in HR policy, or project management, or data analysis yet. But you can bolster your credibility by citing recognized experts in those fields. This accomplishes two things. First, it shows that you're conversant with the discourse in your field. You get points for knowing who the authorities are and being familiar with their work. And, second, having their research in your corner helps bolster your argument, whether you're debating the merits of how you structure your team brainstorming sessions, or how to launch your new product.
