- In professional conversations or meetings, do you use unnecessarily complex language? Let's utilize the data insight and synergize with the corresponding team prior to articulating future action instead of let's study the data with the other team and decide on next steps. If you use smart words to try and appear more sophisticated or intelligent, I hate to break it to you but according to research, it does the opposite and it makes you appear far less intelligent. Not only that, you alienate whoever you're speaking with. You might have noticed that highly charismatic people speak in a way that's easy to understand. It's relatable. It's simple. Sure, they might use certain technical language or industry lingo in context and with the right people so long as it doesn't detract from their communication. Making it harder for people to understand you just to sound smart backfires.
