I recently came across an interesting finding in behavioral economics. The sensation of progress alone can actually increase our motivation. Progress begets progress. In one study involving a car wash promotion, customers were given a punch card to motivate them to become repeat customers. Once they paid for eight washes, the next was free. Half the customers were given regular eight punch cards and the other half were given a ten punch card but with two holes already punched. In other words they were given the feeling of having a head start. Guess who came back for more washes overall? It was the folks with the head start. By seeing themselves as already 20% to goal, instead of at the starting line, they moved their perception of the finish line closer. We can all give ourselves a head start in our daily lives too but more often than not, we're only keeping track of what we still have left to do, not what we already…
