- What do you do If you've been told, "We like you, you're doing a great job," but you're not getting promoted now. Well, all hope is not lost. It might be like you just wasted a year or more striving to be the most promotable person ever. But you haven't. How do I know? Because this happened to me in my first job in sales. In that company, people on the fast track got promoted somewhere between 18 and 36 months. So, when my boss's boss came out to work with me in the field at the 18-month mark, I thought for sure, I'm going to get promoted. But at the end of the day, he explained to me, he thought I needed more time in the field. I was heartbroken. It was worse when one of my peers got the promotion I had been hoping for.
