- How does an organization determine whether it needs robust data governance? Answering this question relies heavily on an organization's assessment of the degree in which it considers data value and compliance to be central to its success. I'll propose two lenses in which to explore this question: competitive advantage and compliance requirements. Let's first look at competitive advantage. For most organizations, managing and lightly governing data is simply a function of being in existence. Every organization collects data and uses it in some form. There are contact and price lists, employee reports and inventory data. These are examples of the basic data sets required for operating an organization in the 21st century.
