- Online or video meetings can create a sense of personal connection, even when team members are separated by a great distance. They also allow us to be aware of body language and facial expressions, which can improve communication. However, they can also become a distraction and burn people out. Video meeting fatigue is a very real thing. Stanford University's Virtual Human Interaction Lab found that attending video conferences is fatiguing and stressful due to excessive eye contact, the distraction of viewing ourselves on camera, a reduction in user mobility, and increased cognitive load. Personally I've found online meeting fatigue can be reduced by using a mix of meeting styles. There are three options for online conferences, video, audio, and hybrid, meaning both in person and online.
