- Good listening is one of the most important characteristics of a leader. Without effective listening skills a leader can't learn about creative ideas or head off conflict early on. While both men and women can of course be good listeners they each tend to employ different listening strategies. We see the most difference in two areas, listening orientation and nonverbal responses. Let's break this down. Studies of the brain show that when men listen only the left side is activated while both hemispheres activate in women. The left brain is associated with analytical thought. This helps us understand one key difference. Men tend to be action-oriented listeners while women are more likely to people-oriented listeners. When a man listens he tries to determine what he has to do in response to the message. This means he focuses attention on defining the problem, and then considers what to do about it.
