- So what do you do if you're an interrupter? This is one of the most common conversational challenges, but it can be incredibly hard to stop yourself. You might know you do it and want to change, but how? Here are a few strategies to get it under control. First, one life hack is to take notes. Oftentimes, writing down what someone is saying can help you focus and distracts you from wanting to jump in immediately. You might discover other side benefits to this as well. For instance, it's easy to forget all the nuances of what someone said, especially if it's a complicated or fraught situation. But if you have it written down, you can refer to it later so you can formulate a more in-depth response. It's also a good strategy to focus on your breathing.
