- There's no one way to have a difficult conversation, sorry. But there is a blueprint or a model we can use to support us as we head into those conversations. Here's a model I like to use. Start by stating your purpose. Then, present your observations. Listen and invite feedback. Then, state your request. Tell them what you want. And finally, wrap it up by creating accountability. Let's put the blueprint to work. You start by stating your purpose. It can go something like this. "Paula, I want to talk with you about your record keeping and how that's affecting your sales numbers." "I want to make sure you have everything you need to meet your goals." Next, share the behaviors you've observed. This can be tricky. It's easy to fall into blame or assumption-making. Assumptions sounds like, "You don't really care about your sales numbers, do you?" But the fact is you don't really know whether Paula cares or not. Just state the facts. What did they actually do or not do? For example, "I…
