When I was 38 years old, I started to take bass lessons and after a year, I went and auditioned for a band and I struggled. I couldn't hear what the drummer was doing. I wasn't trained to listen to the drummer. I would get lost in a song and couldn't hear that I was lost. I knew scales, I knew how to play the bass lines to certain popular songs, I was in a vacuum, no reality, no context around me. So these challenges are designed to give you context, to give you some reality. I would be an irresponsible wretch if I just showed you a bunch of scales and sent you out in the world.
