- Excel has a number of functions categorized as Text functions. If you go to the Formulas tab in the ribbon and choose Text you see quite a few entries here. A lot of these allow us to manipulate information at the character level. In column A we've got a bunch of part numbers here. Now it turns out that some of the codes here are important. The letter G maybe is meaningful and we simply out of a potentially large list want to find those part numbers that have the letter G in them. Maybe that relates to the size of the item, or the color, something like that. We could search for that character with a function called, FIND begins with what it is we're looking for and we want to use double quotes here. ", what are we looking for here? The letter G",. Where are we looking? In cell A2. There could be times when you don't want to begin searching from the leftmost edge, you might want to start for example at the third character.
