- Electronic components that oppose a change in voltage or current are called reactive components. For example, capacitors are reactive components that oppose a change in voltage by absorbing or releasing stored charge to counteract that change. This opposition to change is called reactants, which is abbreviated with a capital X and is measured in units of ohms, just like electrical resistance. And in many ways, reactants is similar to resistance, because they both describe how an electronic component restricts the flow of current. However, there is an important distinction between those two concepts. Resistance describes how an electronic component opposes the flow of current, regardless of whether the voltage across it is AC or DC.
