From the course: Driving Change and Anti-Racism

Identifying inequity

- When it comes to advocating for change in your organization, you want to find issues of inequity. And so this can be really overwhelming. It might feel like trying to find the starting point on a circle. Where do I even start? What I want you to do here is think like a scientist. First, we're going to observe, we're going to recognize those imbalances. Then, I want you to create a hypothesis as to why this may have occurred and then gather data, do some research, maybe do some kind of assessment to figure out what led to this issue. And then, once you uncover a potential structural issue within your organization, you can reverse engineer some solutions. Here's an example of a structural issue within a company. So they recognized that the best way to advance in the company was to create strong relationships with the leaders because the leaders would then hand pick people based on those relationships. And so they would do golf outings to give people an opportunity to get that face time with the leadership. But here's the problem, not everybody likes golf. And so the advocate within the organization recognized this, and now they have activities that are a lot more inclusive. So everybody has equal opportunity to create those relationships and advance within the company.
