- I once participated in a leadership development teaming exercise where each leader provided constructive feedback to each other. My feedback was overall constructive, but one peer decided to really let me have it. She provided my peers with positive and constructive feedback, and then when she got to me, she raised her voice, used harsh language, and overall, her feedback was more personal and unprofessional. Everyone was visibly uncomfortable after her turn,. I remained calm, tried to tell the voice in my head that this wasn't personal, but I was mortified and embarrassed. As the only person of color on the team, I kept thinking, "Why hadn't my leader or anyone else intervened?" When it was my turn to provide her feedback, I simply said, "There are times where you seem to dismiss my contributions to the team, and similar to earlier, your approach seems to be harsh and not collaborative."
