Finding your North Star
- [Instructor] The idea of a North Star analytic is having a single heuristic by which the entire company can work towards. The idea was created by Sean Ellis, and the idea is simply this. By choosing a single data point that everyone can work on, it can provide alignment across departments in an organization, transparency into how things are progressing towards the goal, and ultimately, a holistic focus on your customers and your users. Choosing the right North Star is an art and a science. In order to be a valid and effective North Star, the metric should have a few specific properties. It should express some sort of a value. It should represent your vision and strategy, both for the product and especially for the organization. It should be a somewhat leading indicator, and we'll talk about this in a second.
