- I think the most difficult thing about unconscious bias is that it's unconscious. I mean for sure the invisibility of it makes it difficult for actually believe that it exists. And I remember learning about this study, the orchestra study, where the US orchestras were mostly male until they went to blind auditions and all of sudden the number of women in US orchestras increased five-fold. And when I read about that, I was like, oh my gosh, you mean like when we can see who's playing, we can't hear what they're playing? And this is the scariest thing I've ever heard because we are always, especially as evaluators, we think of ourselves as fair. So when I first started realizing that I was human just like everyone else, even though I am a diversity lady, and I started to recognize that the way our brain works as humans is that it's always like trying to find the easiest solution, the most efficient way of understanding things.
