Overcoming cultural bias

- Each of us process information and situations based on our own knowledge, our attitudes, and past experiences. Because all of this can result in unconscious bias, we need to become more aware of not only our biases, but the factors that create and perpetuate them when we work and interact with people from other cultures. Let me give you an example of unconscious bias that nearly got my younger brother in a whole lot of trouble when he first came to the United States as a student. He was driving a friend's car and he was pulled over for a broken taillight. In Greece, where we grew up, when the police pull you over, you show respect and goodwill by exiting your car. Well, that's not the way it's done in the United States. Here, you show respect by staying in your vehicle and keeping your hands on the steering wheel.
