- Have you ever been passed over for a promotion? It's gut wrenching. I remember the time someone got promoted over me. Everyone knew we were both up for it, and the other guy got it. I didn't. And I had to go into the office the next day and watch everyone congratulate him while they were afraid to make eye contact with me. I felt like a total loser. It was if I was wearing a shirt that said "Passed Over." when someone doesn't get the promotion they wanted, it can be an awkward conversation. The person is likely completely deflated, and sometimes they're angry. In this situation, I'll be coaching Elizabeth, a sales rep who didn't get the sales manager promotion she was up for. She didn't get it because we needed someone with more experience. Now, to clarify, in this scenario, I'm not telling Elizabeth she isn't getting the promotion. We already had that conversation.
