- [Instructor] Meerkats are my favorite coaching example. Meerkats eat scorpions. Yeah, I know. So adult meerkats have to teach their pups the skills to dismantle a live venomous scorpion and then eat it. And the teaching method they use is a perfect example of tiered coaching. The meerkats bring their pups dead scorpions but without the stinger. That gets them used to eating a scorpion. Then they bring them dead scorpions with the stringer still in. The meerkat pups learn how to take out the stinger. Then the pups are ready for an injured scorpion, which is a little easier to manage. Finally, they graduate to a live scorpion. This tiered coaching is also the secret to teaching business skills. Teaching incremental steps instead of one massive skill gives your employees a tangible win and helps them establish a foundation of skills to build on.
