Lee Daniels on following your heart
(light music) - What kind of advice do you give, someone young who's trying to get into the industry or trying to recreate your success. - Mm, I get this question often and then its very-- it's a hard answer because I would not-- I don't know that I would give my son the advice. That I-- To follow in my lead because, you know, I've done some things that I'm not so proud of in getting to where it wasn't that I got. But I think that you have to always follow your heart and never-- Just we're conditioned to reject our spirit. We're conditioned to reject our spirit. You can never go against your spirit cause your spirit will never leave you wrong, ever leave you wrong. - So, when you're son says you aren't following my heart going into modeling, dropping out of school-- - I'd roll my eyes and I regret giving up cigarette smoking. (laughs) - When you're evaluating young talent, what do you look for? - In evaluating young talent what I look for, I look for difference, I look for someone that's going to, I know, jump off that screen and is going to make a difference to the world. With the writing that I'm right and you able to take my words and make a difference. But you have to have something, you have to have a voice inside, it speaks to you, speaks to everybody. - What about behind the camera, what about people who are not the stars, who are the ones who are making the craft work. - Mm-hm. - What do you look in for, when you're trying to hire someone who's never going to be on screen? - Someone that can demand honesty, someone that can command respect and someone that will listen to me. - When you have had a career where you've had so many nos and you prove naysayers wrong and you're now in a position where assume people are telling you yes a lot because you're really successful and you've shown that you know the right pattern, do you want people to tell you no? Are you looking for anyone to push that? - Yeah, I have to get it. I get it and I get it. And boy, when those kids turn, nobody's going to tell you the truth better than your kids. They (beep) (smack) like that and they enjoy it. They enjoy it, so I look for push back and I work around people. I don't want people around me that are yes-ers. I want people to challenge me. I know that it's not me, its the village that makes my-- I'm the one that sadly gets the credit for it but everybody else should really, I'm taking everybody's name on, you know. Your crew here, that they-- They're you. So I think that from me, I am micra. Yeah, they fight me all the time. It's a-- it's a (beep) show (laughs) it's a (beep) show but that's what-- - But turns out great. - Yeah exactly, that's what makes it good.
