- There's a powerful phenomenon in cognitive and social psychology where the very traits you describe in others become attributed to you. It's called spontaneous trait transference. Let's say someone asks you in a private meeting, "What do you think of the new team member, Paul?" And you reply, "Oh, he's arrogant and rude." Whoever is in that room is likely to associate these qualities with you. So the takeout is if you want to be memorable for the right reasons and for what you stand for, start to pay attention to those qualities in others and find opportunities to acknowledge them. For example, if curiosity is something you want associated with your reputation, you might notice and then acknowledge someone else's curiosity. You might say, "I'm really enjoying working with Ally.
