- In scientific experiments, changing people's behavior in complex situations is a little easier than it is in real life. In the lab, you can hire actors to say just the right things in just the right situations in just the right ways, and keep everything constant, except for the things you're experimenting with. It's easy and at times, immediate and obvious to tell if an intervention is working or not, and that immediate feedback makes it straightforward to improve on an intervention until, ideally, it has the effect you're looking for. In real workplaces, though, much of what drives people's behavior is out of your control. You can't control whether they're having a good or a bad day, their relationship with their manager, their workload, or life circumstances outside of work.
