Measuring the impact of equity efforts

- Not every equity outcome is easy or straightforward to practically measure, even if it's an important one. Take harassment, for example. We all want workplaces where harassment is non-existent, and when harassment does happen, we want it to be swiftly dealt with, but when harassment actually happens to someone, they're unlikely to report it for fear of it being traced back to them. A valid fear of retaliation, so relying on only formal reports of harassment would be overlooking the vast majority of unreported cases. In this example, harassment is what we want to measure, but there are no straightforward direct metrics that we can gather to measure it head on. As a result, we have to look for alternate metrics that are easier to measure, but ideally highly correlated with the outcome of interest. Proxy metrics, for example, we might ask workers to anonymously indicate how often they receive disrespectful comments from their peers or managers. We might ask workers to evaluate how…
