I completely forgot about this. I was interviewed for a documentary about the internet, The People's Cloud, which has just come out. I'm in several episodes, but I start already at episode 1, at 1 minute 15. You can watch the full documentary at http://thepeoplescloud.org.

LinkedIn wants me to verify myself. How? Using the email address of my university. The problem: I was last there before email even existed. Why not something I'm more recently involved with, such as my employer? LinkedIn stupid.

Today is the 70th anniversary of Alan Turing's death, ascribed to suicide after being chemically castrated for being gay, at that time a criminal offence, thus depriving the world of one of its greatest mathematicians and computer scientists, one who is still today influential, with the Turing machine, Turing completeness, the Turing Test, and the Halting Problem, and considered the father of AI. For those of you who don't know my connection with Turing, my tutor at university was Dick Grimsdale who built the world's first transistorised computer, and was himself a tutee of Turing. I later worked (entirely coincidentally) in Turing's old department writing software for the 5th computer in the line of computers Turing worked on (he was involved with numbers 1, 2, and 3 before he died).

2 jSteven, this is a highly informative series of short docs. Matt's gorgeous cinema-photography, sound design and animations transform it into an engaging watch. Many topics brought up resonate: how the global network is not one thing that can be managed, but must be managed by what in reality is only a few hundred people around the world; the sheer amount of energy needed to run the Cloud and how we are limited by access to electricity and our ability to cope with waste heat; who owns dark fibre; and perhaps my favourite topic as an Islander: submarine cables. It's great to see open conversations about the resource footprints, competitive advantages and just how big Big Data really is. And a fantastic resource for teaching - thank you for sharing.
