The third rule of cloud cost management: lead with effective #CostGovernance. Cost governance is crucial for ensuring that agility in cloud operations does not come at the expense of budget control. For #FinOps teams and finance departments, the challenge lies in leveraging the cloud effectively while managing costs and achieving a strong return on investment. Key aspects of cost governance include: - Chargeback and Showback: Make sure teams are aware of their spending by implementing chargeback or showback mechanisms. This transparency helps in maintaining budget control. - Regular Communication: Establish regular meetings with leadership to ensure cost governance remains a priority. Aligning finance and engineering teams is essential for effective communication and cost management. - Alignment of Terminology: Finance and engineering often use different terms (e.g., cost center codes vs. application names). Finding common ground and understanding each other's language is important for optimizing costs effectively. - Analyzing Cost Anomalies: For example, NextRoll demonstrates effective cost governance by having engineers respond to anomaly alerts, while finance assesses whether these anomalies are temporary or long-term changes. This process helps in understanding the impact of various factors on costs. Incorporating a tool like Yotascale can support these governance efforts by aiding in budgeting, forecasting, and ensuring proper cost allocation. Collaboration between engineering and finance teams is key to quick responses and accurate forecasting, ultimately leading to better cost management.

For effective cloud cost management, moving beyond basic reporting to AI-powered monitoring and forecasting is essential. This proactive approach not only mitigates risks but also drives optimization, allowing organizations to fully leverage their cloud investments. Flatiron Health's experience with Yotascale highlights the value of this strategy. By utilizing Yotascale’s AI-driven anomaly detection, trend analysis, and consumption forecasting, Flatiron effectively managed their cloud costs. This sophisticated monitoring enabled them to meet ambitious cost optimization targets. “Optimization has been a really, really important part of our Q1, especially as we had some very ambitious cost optimization targets,” explained Jeremy, CloudOps Manager. “We’ve implemented things like a hackathon specifically for AWS, but also in these monthly reviews, we’ve been focusing on the SaaS spend as well, based on having it all centralized in Yotascale.” Embracing intelligent cost monitoring and optimization empowers organizations to stay ahead of cost risks and make data-driven decisions that enhance their financial health and operational efficiency. #CostOptimization #CloudCostManagement #Yotascale #FlatironHealth #Innovation

Creating a FinOps culture isn't just about managing cloud costs within a single department—it's about fostering a collaborative environment where financial accountability and efficiency are shared across the entire organization. When everyone, from engineers to executives, understands and engages in cloud cost management, the results can be transformative. Flatiron Health exemplifies this holistic approach. Faced with complex and rising cloud costs, they turned to Yotascale’s Total Platform Cost Management (TPCM) solution. By integrating Yotascale, Flatiron achieved centralized cost visibility, enabling detailed tracking and analysis across business units, products, and teams. "We are doing things like monthly consumption reviews with the executive team and weekly reviews on a per-director, per-team view, so that everybody knows what's going on with our cloud finances," said Jeremy Haber, CloudOps Senior Manager at Flatiron. Embracing a FinOps culture means making cloud cost management a shared responsibility. When every team understands their role in managing expenses, organizations can achieve greater efficiency and drive innovation without compromising financial health. One of the most impactful things we can do as leaders in engineering and FinOps is to empower our engineers with real-time cost data and then step back to let them innovate. By giving them the tools and insights to understand the financial impact of their decisions, we unlock a new level of operating that eliminates the tension between creativity and cost. Take Flatiron Health, for example. They faced immense challenges in managing their cloud costs until they partnered with Yotascale. With Yotascale's Total Platform Cost Management (TPCM) capabilities, Flatiron's engineers gained granular visibility into their multi-cloud environment. This empowerment was transformative. "One of the big reasons we landed on Yotascale was the ability for our engineering teams to get very granular," said the VP Software Engineering at Flatiron. "We wanted to ensure that any engineer could understand the cost impact of the applications they were creating or deploying, and make adjustments accordingly." This shift allowed Flatiron's engineering team to make informed, cost-effective decisions without constant oversight, driving both innovation and efficiency. Flatiron Health's journey with Yotascale exemplifies how empowering engineers with the right data can lead to remarkable outcomes. Trust engineering teams with the information they need and watch them drive our organizations forward. When you're navigating the complexities of platform cost management, integrate a Zen approach to enhance clarity and reduce stress. Here’s how: 1. Embrace Mindfulness: Start each financial review session with a moment of calm. This helps clear your mind and improve focus on the task at hand. 2. Simplify Tracking: Use tools that aggregate and visualize costs simply. Less clutter, less stress. 3. Educate Continuously: Keep your team informed about cost implications and best practices. Knowledge is power—and peace. 4. Automate Processes: Implement automation where possible to minimize repetitive tasks and reduce errors. Remember, a Zen approach isn't just about staying calm—it's about creating a system that brings peace and productivity to your platform cost management tasks. The second rule of cloud cost management: Turn visibility into business insights. Having a clear view of your cloud costs is just the beginning. The next step is transforming this visibility into actionable business insights that drive value. Use your cost data to spot spending patterns and trends. Understanding these trends helps you plan and allocate resources more effectively. Leverage insights to identify underutilized resources, reduce waste, and reallocate resources where they’re needed most. It's crucial to tie resource costs back to the business by linking cloud expenses to specific projects, departments, or business units. This alignment helps you understand which areas are driving costs and how they contribute to the overall business objectives. By doing so, you can make informed decisions on resource allocation, prioritize investments, and measure the ROI of cloud spending. And finally, share what you learn with all relevant teams. When everyone has a clear understanding of costs and their impact, it fosters a culture of accountability and proactive cost management. Over time, your cost insights will inform strategic decisions, leading to better outcomes for your business. 👇 Link in the comments to the full 6-Factor CCM framework.👇 #cloudcost #cloudcostmanagement #cloudcostoptimization #cloudfinops #cloudengineering #cloudcostintelligence #cloudroi #mlops #aiops

"Cloud cost visibility" sounds great, but what does it actually mean in practice? Here's a real world example from William Howell at Okta: "…We started noticing that we had some tests that were just more expensive than other tests to run. We found those tests were picking a very old architecture to run on at Amazon and it was 20% more expensive to use that architecture. "So we asked the teams, “Why are you running on this old architecture?” and they said, “Well, it works and we’ve never had to change it.” So we bumped those instance sizes up, the time goes down, compute cost goes down, and now it costs less to run the same test." The fact of the matter is, you never know what opportunities for resource optimization and savings you're going to find, until you have the cost data in front of you in a format that's easy to understand and share across teams. More great examples from Will Howell in the webinar replay.
