The latest FTC vote to make non-competes illegal is making headlines. In their statement they explain that, "Non-competes are a widespread and often exploitative practice imposing contractual conditions that prevent workers from taking a new job or starting a new business. Non-competes often force workers to either stay in a job they want to leave or bear other significant harms and costs, such as being forced to switch to a lower-paying field, being forced to relocate, being forced to leave the workforce altogether, or being forced to defend against expensive litigation." This ruling will have a bumpy road ahead as it will likely be challenged while employers will be working to figure this out. The question though is, could this have a positive impact on company culture now? Will employers be forced to invest in employees more and look at better incentives to retain top talent that can elevate company culture, or will they find other workarounds to keep things as-is?
