“At Victim Support, we are appalled by the violence we’ve seen over the weekend. The riots and racist attacks on individuals and communities are truly shocking and completely unacceptable. It is not just those members of our society who have been physically harmed – chased, punched, or spat at, that will be affected. Others may have experienced racist slurs, or have had their property burnt or looted. Many people may not have directly experienced physical or verbal abuse this weekend, but now live in fear of this – afraid to go about their day-to-day lives.  Nobody should have to live with the fear and anxiety, emotional and physical harm of hate crime. We stand against hate and discrimination and proudly offer support to those who have been affected.” - Katie Kempen, CEO, Victim Support

Our CEO, Katie Kempen and Victim Support frontline staff met the new minister for victim-survivors Alex Davies-Jones MP to talk about current issues facing victims of crime. The discussions were around the importance of putting victims’ needs first and what must be done to improve the experience of the #CriminalJusticeSystem. Alongside this, it was agreed that: -      victims must be given their basic rights -      we need a much more joined up approach across agencies -      we need to see greater investment in mental health services and a more appropriate offering for victims after they’ve experienced crime. This conversation is hopefully one of many and we will continue to support victims of crime and be an active voice for improvements in victims’ rights. #VictimsOfCrime #Charity Ministry of Justice UK

Our CEO, Katie Kempen has said: “The Southport attack is both shocking and devastating. Our thoughts are with the friends and families of the victims during this difficult time.” Support details are below. #Southport #Merseyside

I am utterly shocked and devastated by the truly appalling incident in #Southport. First and foremost, my heart goes out to the young victims, their families and all who knew and loved them. I cannot imagine the untold pain and heartache they facing. To hear that innocent, defenceless children have been attacked during a Taylor Swift event at a dance school as they enjoyed the start of the school summer holidays is unthinkable and absolutely abhorrent. These young people had their whole lives ahead of them and it is hard to find the words to convey our deep sadness. Our region will be heartbroken that more young lives have been lost at the hands of violence and more have suffered serious injuries, and I share local people’s deep concern and anguish. Thanks to the efforts of @merseysidepolice officers an arrest was made quickly and there is no wider threat to the public. I’d like to give my profound thanks to the dozens of police officers and emergency service workers who were called to the scene to help the injured in the aftermath of this horrendous incident and to all those who are now caring for them. I am in close communication with the Chief Constable, and I will be working with partners across Southport to put in place any support we can in the following days. It’s crucial we now unite to help all those who are grieving today and reassure those living in the community of Meols Cop and Southport. An investigation is now underway, and I would urge people to be very careful with what they share online in the aftermath of this incident and not to speculate. I would urge anyone who has been affected by this incident and needs advice or support to contact our Victim Care Merseyside service by calling Freephone 0808 175 3080 on weekdays between 8am and 6pm or online at https://lnkd.in/gtBurKR

Violence and abuse against #RetailWorkers is increasing. A crime survey by the British Retail Consortium showed a 50% increase in levels of retail violence and abuse, to 1,300 incidents a day in 2022/23, from almost 870 per day in the previous year. Nobody should feel unsafe at work. Being shouted at, threatened, abused or having someone being violent towards you is not acceptable. If you know someone who is experiencing #RetailAbuse or violence, you can find useful information our online platform, My Support Space. There’s guidance on what you can do if it’s happening to you and different ways you can access support. It’s free to create an account: www.mysupportspace.org.uk
