About us
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. We lead international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. We deliver life-saving assistance, help safeguard fundamental human rights, and develop solutions that ensure people have a safe place called home where they can build a better future. We also work to ensure that stateless people are granted a nationality. We work in over 130 countries, using our expertise to protect and care for millions. UNHCR’s greatest asset is our workforce. We work with passionate, talented and creative individuals who want to use their skills for good. Thanks to people like you, we can develop solutions that enable people who have been forced to flee to restart their lives and build better futures. Exciting progress at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency! We've achieved gender parity across all international professional staff levels, with nearly 19,800 colleagues worldwide. Learn more in the announcement from UNHCR’s Deputy High Commissioner, Kelly T. Clements ⬇️
Deputy High Commissioner at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency - Proud humanitarian and development advocate, diplomat, and transformational leader.
Today before our governing board, I proudly shared that we've achieved gender parity across all levels of international professional staff! With nearly 19,800 colleagues across 588 locations, our focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion is stronger than ever. Since launching our DEI Strategic Framework in April, we’ve exceeded gender parity from P2 to P5 levels and made significant strides at the senior D2 level—proving that when we invest in women, we all win! We're committed to advancing these efforts by promoting equal opportunities for women in leadership, strengthening gender-sensitive policies, and promoting an inclusive workplace culture that empowers all colleagues. I am so proud of our progress and remain dedicated to advocating relentlessly for an inclusive, equitable future at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. #GenderParity #WomenInLeadership #InclusiveWorkplace #DEI #UNHCR United Nations António Guterres Sima Bahous Catherine Pollard Catty Bennet Sattler Fadzi Whande Ruven Menikdiwela Raouf Mazou Mamadou Dian Balde Hai Kyung Jun

Can cultural exposure transform your perspective? 🌍 Haymanot Reta Woldemichael believes it can. Her experiences working in culturally diverse environments have shown her how much we share in common, despite our different backgrounds. In today’s #StaffSpotlight, read about her reflections on her journey from Ethiopia to working across East Africa. #HumanitariansAtWork
🌍 What I’ve Learned from Working in Various Cultural Environments 🌍 We are more alike than we admit 🤝 Starting my humanitarian journey with Somali refugees in Melkedida, Ethiopia, I socialized with colleagues from Germany, Nepal, Netherlands, Italy, Pakistan, and more. We cooked, ate, drank, chatted, danced, and hiked together. As a shy girl from Addis, this exposure opened my eyes and created a hunger to see and experience the world. Despite our different backgrounds, we found so much in common. We shared stories, shed tears, and recognized ourselves in each other. 🌟 Expanding horizons through cultural exposure 🌏 Before joining UNHCR, I never dreamed of working in East Africa. Working in a multicultural environment inspired me to become an IUNV. It gave me the courage to leave my comfort zone and work elsewhere. In Tanzania, I traveled within East Africa, experiencing the country’s natural beauty and peace. I visited Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda, making life-enriching connections along the way. 🌿 Growing by learning from others 🌱 Exposure to various cultures has made me open-minded, inclusive, tolerant, optimistic, and better connected with others. I have a deeper understanding of the world and look forward to exploring even more. The key to the world has been opened for me, and I am grateful for UNHCR. 🗝️ #CulturalDiversity #LifeLessons #UNHCR #Grateful #GlobalCitizen 🌐#HumaniterianAtWork

Curious about what it's like to work in a diverse, international environment? In today's #StaffSpotlight, Ikileng' Oguti shares key lessons learned from his experiences working with a global team. Whether you’re considering a role with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, or a similar organization, these insights could provide valuable perspective ✨ #HumanitariansAtWork
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is a global organization with a highly diverse and international workforce. This diversity enriches the organization and enhances our ability to respond to complex humanitarian challenges. Here are the top three lessons I have learned, which you may find useful if you ever consider working at UNHCR or in similar cultural environments: 1. Avoid negative workplace politics. Regardless of where your colleagues come from, acknowledge the importance of their roles. Leverage their wide range of skills and experiences to build innovative solutions that drive the team towards success. 2. Understand and respect other people’s cultural norms and practices, even when they differ from yours. Use the available formal channels to provide feedback, raise concerns, and address any conflicts that may arise due to cultural differences or misunderstandings. Most importantly, be kind, professional and honest while doing so. 3. Be adaptable and open to new ways of thinking and working. As #humanitariansatwork, we are often in the field directly supporting refugees and displaced persons in challenging environments, including conflict zones and areas affected by natural disasters. Thus, each culture’s unique perspectives and approaches to solving problems are crucial. In a nutshell, working in a diverse and dynamic environment like UNHCR offers invaluable experiences and insights. Be prepared to embrace that diversity, learn from it, and contribute to making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve. I will be happy to hear and learn from your experiences.
