On this day in 1909, the U.S. Army Signal Corps made a historic purchase, acquiring the Wright 1909 Military Flyer for $30,000. Designated as Signal Corps Airplane No. 1, it became the first military heavier-than-air flying machine. The Flyer played a crucial role in training pilots at Fort San Antonio, Texas, and despite multiple crashes and rebuilds, it served diligently for nearly two years before being donated to the Smithsonian Institution. During its test flights, with Orville Wright and Lieutenant Benjamin D. Fulois on board, the Flyer demonstrated impressive performance, achieving a two-way average speed of 42.583 mph and staying airborne for 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 40 seconds.
